sober october
I didn't set out to stop drinking. I didn’t have a dramatic moment when I decided to stop drinking. No awful hangover, no big promise to never touch alcohol again. I was just experimenting with a different way of eating to see what balancing my blood sugar might feel like. As part of that, I stopped drinking. And then something strange happened. I just didn't want to start again. We often talk about alcohol in extremes, either you've got a serious problem or there's no reason to question it. There's a huge space in between. For me, stopping was simply a way of paying attention to my health. How do I actually feel without this? That's what I like about the idea behind Sober October. You don't need to pledge forever, or even think that there's anything wrong. You can just try and notice. Notice your sleep, your energy, your mood, your appetite, or even just your evenings. See what changes, see what doesn't, and allow yourself to learn something. For me those small, better mornings just stacked up. Nothing dramatic. Just quiet. Preference. And if you try Sober October this year, maybe don't ask, "Can I give this up?" but maybe ask, "What happens if I just get curious?" Feel better now, stay healthier for longer.
